Martin is a partner and senior client relationship manager. He leads Barnett Waddingham’s defined contribution (DC) services to the Charity and Education sectors, and currently holds the position of Chair on the Society of Pension Professionals’ DC Committee.

He advises a range of not-for-profit organisations operating in the Arts & Culture, and Religious sectors, and beyond this provides consultancy support to a wide range of corporate and trustee clients, both UK and multi-national.


Significant experience:

  • design and implementation of group pension arrangements – including provider, benefit structure, salary sacrifice, and more
  • ongoing governance of DC pension arrangements, both to employers and trustees
  • advice on strategy and particpation in delivery of member engagement, including staff presentations and one to one employee information sessions
  • advice on various DC consolidation exercises so clients can streamline their pension arrangements into single good quality schemes
  • advice and management of defined benefit (DB) to DC transition exercises, including wider benefits

Other expertise:

Martin has specialist knowledge and experience in technical pension project work including winding-up DC pension arrangements, discharging DC pension arrangements in conjunction with PPF assessment periods, and preservation of employee benefit entitlements in relation to corporate activity. He has advised local government pension schemes in relation to DC pension benefits.

He has also spoken at a variety of industry events focusing on defined contribution pension issues and participates in industry wide legislation development. This includes giving evidence to the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) in relation to reviewing auto-enrolment and helping savers understand their pension choices, and to the Parliamentary Select Committee in relation to saving for later life.
